Review by Carlie Newman
Adapted from Amelie Nothomb’s memoir, The character of rain, the story tells how Amelie is born in a kind of vegetative state and only becomes animated and there is an earthquake . She is very difficult and screams and misbehaves until her grandmother feeds her Belgian white chocolate. Amélie (voiced by Loise Charpentier) . later forms a close relationship with her Japanese nanny, Nishio-San (voiced by Victoria Grosbois).
Life doesn’t progress smoothly however and the family’s landlady, Kashima-san (Yumi Fujimori) hates her European tenants as she blames them for the allied bombings during the war.
The film deals with these problems and Amelie has to face a different future.
It’s a lovely movie, beautiful to look at and exceptionally well-drawn. I was accompanied by two young French girls who adored the film as did their mother!
In cinemas now in its original French version and also available in an English dubbed version. Choose your cinema carefully!
