Review by Carlie Newman

It’s a welcome to Part 2 of Wicked. Although the first film was more enjoyable, it is good to see the “what happens next” movie.

Rather heavy in execution, it does not have the lightness of touch that the first movie had. But both films are muc better than the stage show in London!

The story continues from the first film. Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) is called ‘ the Wicked Witch of the West’ by the townsfolk of Oz. She is now living in the forest of the outskirts of Oz. She wants to expose the wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), and protect the animals he has treated cruelly.

Glinda (Ariana Grande), dressed in a very pretty pink dress, is living a favoured life at the palace in Emerald City. She is expecting to marry Prince Fiero (Jonathan Bailey) and encouraged to support the wizard by Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).  Now leading separate lives, we wait to see if Glinda and Elphaba can come together again.

There are lots of very well sung songs, particularly by Arrivo and Grande, but somehow none remain with us when we leave the cinema. However, both Erivo Grande give good performances, the cinematography, costumes and to some extent the choreography are all good and the musical works well enough to enable us to enjoy the movie while we are watching it.
