Cast: Rachel McAdams, Dylan O’Brien
Review by Carlie Newman
However, that’s not what this film is about. Hard-working office employee, Linda (Rachel McAdams) produces excellent work but her reports are hijacked by a group of male yupee employees. She is very disappointed to find that her new boss, Bradley (Dylan O’Brien) will not honour her promised promotion. He is arrogant and conceited. Bradley just uses Linda. Taking her on a work trip, he laughs about her hobby of survival tactics with his male colleagues.
However, when the plane crashes, Linda and Bradley are the only survivors and Linda puts her survival instincts into operation. Their roles are reversed and Linda is the one in control with Bradley forced to do her bidding. The dynamics have changed and the couple have to do everything together and separately to survive.
There are many twists to the story and director Sam Raimi deals with the violence in comedic fashion. The film is mainly a two hander. McAdams brings her considerable skills to the role of a trodden down employee who rises in unforeseen circumstances. While O’Brien has to undergo a considerable change from the misogynist boss to dependent survivor.
Being a Sam Raimi film, I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised at the amount of violence on show. But the film is well directed and acted with conviction by its two stars.
On release now.
