Scrap|Close-Up Film Review

Dir: Vivian Kerr  US, 2024, 105 mins.

Cast: Vivian Kerr, Anthony Rapp, Lana Parrilla, Julianna Layne

Review by Carlie Newman

The sensitive and seemingly truthful tale of a single mother, struggling to live with no money coming in as portrayed by Vivian Kerr, who is also the director and writer of the film, makes this a movie worth seeing.

Beth (Vivian Kerr) sleeps and lives in her car in Los Angeles. She is homeless as she has lost her job. She still has lots of good quality clothes and makeup, which she puts on to go to job interviews. Beth has left her small daughter, Birdy (Julianna Layne) with her brother Ben(Anthony Rapp) and his wife, Stacy (Lana Parrilla), telling them she is away on a business trip. She doesn’t want her brother to know that she has no money.

Ben and Stacy have their own problems as they are desperately trying to have a child and are having to deal with fertility treatment. They are fed up with Beth’s lies and looking after a 5-year-old child who needs her mother.

While Ben can accept, to some degree, Beth misleading him about her lifestyle, he is angry when, hungover, she stays with her ex and forgets to go to her daughter’s ballet performance.

There is good chemistry between Ben and his sister and you can feel the chemistry between all the cast members. The script is somewhat basic but performances are outstanding and the film is most watchable.
