My Old Ass (15) |Close-Up Film Review
Written and directed by Megan Park, My Old Ass follows the free-spirited 18-year-old Elliott Labrant (Maisy Stella), who is on the brink of leaving for college. But after a wild mushroom trip, she’s suddenly confronted by her 39-year-old self. This older version of Elliott warns her younger self to stay away from a man named Chad, sending Elliott into a whirlwind of questions and self-reflection. What starts as a surreal encounter turns into a heartfelt journey where Elliott must rethink everything she thought she knew about her family, her future, and love itself.
I thoroughly enjoyed the balance of humour and emotional depth in this film. Park captures the awkward, uncertain moments of youth, and contrasts them beautifully with the regret and wisdom that come with age. Maisy Stella is fantastic as Elliott, and the younger cast shines just as brightly—definitely stars in the making.
My Old Ass is an emotional rollercoaster with just the right amount of wit and humour to keep it light while still delivering a poignant message. Though the film isn’t flawless—some moments could have been further explored—it’s an engaging and thoughtful piece. For its compelling performances, clever writing, and ability to blend humor and heart so seamlessly.
A fabulous film and definitely one to watch!
