Emmanuelle (18) |Close-Up Film Review

Dir: Audrey Diwan, France 2024, 1hr. 47mins.

Cast: Noemie Merlant, Will Sharp, Naomie Watts

Review by Carlie Newman

I was looking forward to seeing what was announced as a reinterpretation of the original, French film, famous for its sexy scenes which seemed exciting in 1974, the year that Emanuelle appeared. It starred Sylvia Kristel and had people – particularly men in raincoats – queuing to see it!

Unfortunately, this film is neither exciting nor particularly erotic in its sexually explicit scenes . More like soft porn, the actress, Noemie Merlant spends most of the time during her stay in Hong Kong, where she is supposed to be overseeing how the management in a luxury hotel operates, engaging in various sex acts with both men and women.

Waste of time for the British actor, Will Sharpe, who does what he can in his characterisation of an engineer who has an unknown secret life but stays in the hotel, where Emmanuel works. Naomie Watts as management person that Emmanuelle is investigating, tries bravely but can’t save this dire movie. Probably best to leave this film on your no-see agenda.
