Dogwoof, Sylver Entertainment and Velvet Moss are excited to announce the UK theatrical release of LOMU, a highly anticipated documentary telling the extraordinary untold story of rugby’s greatest icon, Jonah Lomu. Following the London Premiere at the London Breeze Film Festival on Thursday 3 September, LOMU will be in UK and Irish cinemas for one night only on Monday 7 September.
Jonah Lomu was rugby’s first global superstar, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential players in the history of the sport. He was a game-changer with a unique combination of size, power and speed who became the All Blacks’ youngest ever player and a cultural icon.
Directed by Irish filmmaker Gavin Fitzgerald (Conor McGregor: Notorious) and Tongan-New Zealander Vea Mafile-o (For My Father’s Kingdom), LOMU uses unprecedented access to Lomu’s family and archives to give an intimate and heartfelt character study tracing his Tongan upbringing, meteoric rise to fame, and the complicated personal and health battles he faced at the pinnacle of world rugby.
Jonah Lomu’s rugby highlights are well documented: youngest ever All Black at the age of nineteen, player of the tournament at the 1995 South Africa Rugby World Cup and record holder for most tries scored in World Cup history. LOMU goes beyond the sporting achievements to reveal the layers of Jonah Lomu’s life off the field – a warrior who fought against extraordinary odds to wear the All Blacks jersey. With unprecedented access to Jonah’s family and archives, the documentary goes deeper than ever before, correcting sensationalist narratives, confronting uncomfortable truths, and revealing the real man behind the myth. This is not just the story of a rugby legend, but of a human being whose strength, power, and legacy continue to resonate long after the final whistle.
