Review by Carlie Newman
Scott Thomas has turned her own life into a fictional story of three sisters, Katherine (Scarlett Johansson), a Captain in the Royal Navy; Victoria (Sienna Miller), a Hollywood actress and Georgina, a NHS nurse. All in their thirties now, they return to their childhood home for the third wedding of their mother, Diana (Kristin Scott Thomas)who has already been widowed twice.
The daughters all have emotional baggage to deal with during the three days they spend with their mother and her future husband. They are made to examine the past and particularly their relationship with their dead fathers who they have been idealising.
Three good performances from the 3 younger actresses and another excellent one from Scott Thomas who puts across her final monologue with a ringing intensity – as she probably wrote it, that is not so surprising!
The story is a good one, but in spite of the competent performances and direction it somehow lacks any real excitement and as an audience we watch a pleasant film but are not over moved, just satisfactorily entertained.
